Task 3: Signs & Symptoms of the injury

The sign of a hamstring injury is usually quite obvious as the athlete may suddenly stop performing their movement and clutch at the back of their thigh in pain (see Fig 3). Another example is an athlete 'pulling up' when running e.g slowing their speed as they cannot continue at the current pace due to the pain in their hamstring muscles.

Common symptoms:
  • Fig.3
Sharp, sudden pain at back of leg
  • Muscles going into spasm, tightness
  • Swelling and bruising
  • Being unable to walk (highly likely in grade 2,3's)
  • Bending knee against resistance causes pain
  • Inability to straighten knee
